What is biofilms?

What is a biofilm?
- - A biofilm is a tiny community of microorganisms (like bacteria and fungi) that stick together and to a surface, forming a slimy, protective layer.
- - On the scalp, these microorganisms can attach to skin cells, hair follicles, and the scalp’s surface.
- - The biofilm acts like a shield, helping microbes resist drying, cleaning agents, and sometimes medications.
Why does it form on the scalp?
- The scalp provides a warm, moist environment with natural oils (sebum) that many microorganisms feed on.
- Skin cells shed continuously, creating a surface that microbes can colonize.
- Factors that promote biofilm formation include oily scalps, certain skin conditions, hormonal changes, stress, and environmental factors like humidity.
What it means for scalp health
- Biofilms can contribute to or aggravate common scalp issues by:
- Protecting microbes from regular shampoos or topical treatments.
- Prolonging inflammation or irritation.
- Maintaining persistent symptoms such as itching, flaking, or redness.
Common conditions associated with scalp biofilms
- Seborrheic dermatitis: Red, flaky, oily scalp often linked to yeast (Malassezia) that can form biofilms.
- Dandruff: Malassezia and other microbes can create slimy layers that are harder to remove with basic cleansing.
- Folliculitis: Inflammation of hair follicles that can be exacerbated by resilient microbial communities.
- Psoriasis (less commonly): May involve biofilm-like communities in some cases, contributing to plaque formation.
Signs you might have a biofilm-related issue
- Flaky, greasy or oily scalp with persistent itching.
- Dandruff flakes that seem stubborn despite frequent washing.
- Redness or irritation that doesn’t fully respond to standard shampoos.
- Occasional scalp tenderness or minor bumps around hair follicles.
